The St Giles’ memorials to those who died in the two world wars are the brass plaques – inside the church, on the north wall and west of the north door.
To commemorate the 100th anniversary of the First World War (The Great War as it was known at the time), there is a display board hanging to the right of the brasses, giving information about the men who died.
The central panel of the display, giving individual biographies of the men commemorated, changed as the 100th anniversary of each man’s death was reached and was marked at the Sunday Evensong service closest to each anniversary.
To conclude the St Giles’ Great War commemorations, three copies of a Memorial Record Book have been printed using the information collected for the display board, including the biographies of each man, with maps showing where they had lived in the parish and where they had died.
One copy of the book will be kept in the Document Safe, one will be on display in church and one copy will be deposited with other St Giles’,Oxford records in the County Record Office.
