The 100th anniversary of the ending of “The Great War”

On Sunday 11th November it will be 100 years to the day of the ending of the Great War. We are marking this moment in history in three special ways:

  1. A special edition of the Parish Magazine.
  2. The mounting of a display of the window that Nick Mynheer designed for Sothwell Minster.
  3. A special service of Choral Evensong at 6:30pm.

For the month of November, the magazine is devoted to stories associated with the ending of the Great War. This is a colour edition to mark this occasion.

The window that Nick Mynheer designed for Southwell Minster depicts the crucifixion with a soldier being taken down form the cross. Nick has lent the drawing used for making the window and this full life-sized drawing will be put on display in the chancel behind the nave altar. It will be in place from November 6th to November 17th.

At Evensong on 11 November to the 18 men of St Giles’ who are remembered on our war memorial will be remembered. I hope that many of you would like to make a point of coming to this service, even if you don’t normally come to Evensong. We are looking for some volunteers to take (a small) part in proceedings – nothing arduous or needing rehearsal. Please contact by email or phone myself or Alison Bickmore for more information if you would like to be involved. We are hoping that the book of remembrance that Alison has prepared about the men who died in the Great War will be available for viewing at this service.

Yours,

Andrew.
