Roof Appeal
2005-2007

APPEAL TARGETS

* Phase 1
Chancel Roof - £93,000

* Phase 2
Lady Chapel Roof - £60,000

St Giles Oxford is an historic mediaeval church - it is a Grade 1 Listed Building and its Chancel and Lady Chapel roofs are in urgent need of restoration.

The Chancel is the earliest surviving area of St Giles’ with C12th and C13th masonry and C13th chancel beams. The Stonesfield roof tiles need periodic renewal and were last replaced in 1936, using tiles salvaged from a disused Oxfordshire barn.

The Lady Chapel roof and south wall were rebuilt in the C19th and only patched since.

Continual minor repairs and patching to both roofs have gradually overloaded and damaged the ancient supporting beams. Their state is now critical.

The age of the timbers, verified by a dendrochronological survey and announced in the Autumn of 2006 is from C.1288 AD

How will the money be raised?

  • The PCC is applying to English Heritage, Charitable Trusts and other Grant making bodies
  • The congregation is earmarking 15% of its Stewardship giving for the next three years
  • The PCC will use such financial reserves as it can prudently afford, bearing in mind that the annual parish running costs of about £50,000 have to continue to be met
  • The congregation is organising events and sponsored activities for those working and living in the local area as well as for all friends of St Giles, highlighting the profile of the church and its need
  • Colleges, institutions and businesses in the neighbourhood will be asked to help preserve a significant landmark in the local environment

How will the money be used?

  • To strip the roof slopes and fit roof felt, battens and counter battens
  • To make timber decay repairs to existing roof timbers
  • To re-tile the roofs, using the existing tiles where possible
  • To repair and re-fix tabling stones, finial stones and ridge stones
  • To renew lead valley gutter, abutments and lead secret gutters
  • To pay for appropriate professional supervision - architect, structural engineer, timber decay specialist, etc - of all the work

How you can help?

If you can help by making a contribution, however large or small, we would be very grateful.

There is a churn for donations inside the church door.

Cheques or CAF gifts should be payable to St Giles’ Roof Appeal and put in the churn, or sent to:
The Treasurer
28 Northmoor Road
Oxford, OX2 6UR

If you are in the position to use GIFT AID, please be sure to make use of this government tax concession (it increases the value of your gift by 28%). Special Gift Aid envelopes are available on the church pews
