Our Recital-quality Piano

St Giles owns a fine vintage 1880 Bechstein Boudoir Grand piano which is available for recitals and small chamber groups to rehearse with or to give concerts. The instrument was given to the church in the 1950s.

Now it is fully restored, it has been assessed as a potential 'Stradivarius' amongst pianos of its period The cost of the restoration has been about £6,000 and  Marcus Roberts of Oxford was responsible for the work to bring it back to its 1880 condition.

The Bechstein piano is a lovely instrument which we offer for recitals and teaching.

Seating

We have approximately 150-200 pew-style seats, some with restricted view. We are not really a very suitable venue for very large choirs or large orchestras - though chamber groups would find it quite suitable.

Acoustics

The church has a very clear and natural acoustic - grateful to keyboard, chamber music and voice alike without being over-resonant.

Facilities

St Giles is equipped with a small pantry and fully accessible ground floor toilet - which makes it a very useful small venue in the historic heart of Oxford.

We have a lockable and modern heated choir vestry which acts as a comfortable 'Green Room' for performers

There is a church hall adjacent, and there are further toilets there. A fee would be charged for access to the Hall of around £10 per hour on Saturday or Sunday evenings.

We do not usually offer parking to people using the church, other than for loading and unloading purposes. However, we do have space for 2 vehicles, which performers can use, and there is good public (paid) car parking nearby in St Giles Street for people attending the concert.

If you want to find out more about arranging your own recital or attending concerts in St Giles, please contact the Church Secretary.
