Jan Mark has been living in Oxford for most of the last 21 years, coming here first as Arts council Writer Fellow at the Polytechnic, now Brookes University. She was a teacher before she was a writer and in those days wrote for children. Two of the books, “Thunder and Lightnings” and “Handles” were awarded the Carnegie Medal in 1976 and 1983. Now she writes fiction for anyone who is interested and non-fiction on the history of children’s literature (which does not interest children at all), also reviews for The Guardian, Times Educational Supplement and Carousal, the magazine of the Federation of Children’s Book Groups. She is sometimes asked to compile anthologies such as The Oxford Book of Children’s Stories and this year, A Jetblack Sunrise, poems of war and conflict. The two most recent novels are “Something in the Air” and “Stratford Boys”. |
