The first speaker in this term’s series of lunchtime talks is Brian Aldiss D.Litt and his chosen title is Writing for Dear Life. Brian Aldiss has been writing since he was four years old. He has written a history of science fiction, Billion Year Spree and many science fiction novels which have been read all round the world. His first novel was “Non-Stop” (1956). Notable also is the four volumes of his Squire Quartet: Life in the West, Firbidden Life, Remembrance Day and Somewhere East of Life (Abacus, 1998/9). His latest Super-State (Orbit, 2002), about the EU forty years on. His youthful and jubilant forthcoming novel, Affairs at Hampden Ferrers will be published early next year by Little Brown. This light-hearted romance is set in a fictitious village just outside Oxford. Brian Aldiss is a Surrealist, as the story he shall read in St Giles’ will indicate. |
