St Giles’ Roof Appeal was launched in 2005 to fund essential repairs to St Giles’ Church, including a new roof for the Chancel and Lady Chapel. When these have been completed the next phase of work will include redecoration, repair of the organ and re-hanging of the bells. Contributions are warmly welcomed. Please make cheques payable to St Giles’ Church and send to: Mrs Alison Bickmore,
Treasurer About St Giles’ Church The Church of St Giles was probably built as a private church by Edwin, son of Godegose, between 1123 and 1133, but soon had a huge but thinly populated parish of its own stretching northwards as far as the present northern bypass, and including Port Meadow in the West and extending to the River Cherwell in the east. St John's College bought the advowson of the church in 1553. The church was damaged during the siege of Oxford in the Civil War, and in 1643 its furniture was burnt by parliamentary troops who were being held prisoner in the church. The picture on the cover shows the church in 1834, when it marked the beginning of the countryside. As outlying parts of Oxford were developed, it gradually lost chunks of its parish to Summertown, St Paul's, St Philip & St James and St Margaret’s.. |
