PROGRAMME
Luigi
Boccherini (1743-1805),
Sonata in C minor for viola and bass
Cello
player, by the age 25 he was invited to Paris to appear as a soloist. He
was hailed as a great virtuoso and his works were extremely popular. When
Italian opera dominated all over Europe, he continued the tradition of
Italian instrumental music. He founded the first stable quartet and wrote
the first quartets ever. His works include 30 symphonies, 11 cello
concertos and chamber music with 137 quintets, 91 quartets and much more.
Alessandro
Rolla, (1757-1841), Sonata
in C major for viola and piano
After
his initial studies he moved to Milan and soon became known as a virtuoso.
In 1782 he was appointed leader of the Ducale Orchestra in Parma, playing
violin and viola and in 1803 leader of the La Scala Orchestra in Milan. He
took part in the first Milanese performances of Mozart’s Don Giovanni
and Beethoven’s first Symphonies. In 1808 he became teacher of violin and
viola at the Conservatory. His role was very important in the development
of violin and viola technique. He composed about 400 works, from
didactical compositions to sonatas, symphonies, concertos for violin and
for viola and orchestra.
Niccolò
Paganini, (1782-1840),
Sonata in A minor for viola and piano
The
“greatest of violinists” in 1796 was pupil of A. Rolla who had an
important influence on him and one may assume that Rolla introduced him to
viola playing. Paganini’s love for the viola led him to compose works of
great interest for the instrument, such as the Quartet n.15 for
viola concertante, violin, guitar and cello (of which this sonata is a
transcription), the Serenata and Terzetto concertante,
besides the concert piece Sonata per la Grand Viola e Orchestra.
