Cathy Bell was a soprano choral scholar at Gonville
and Caius College, Cambridge, where she read English and took an MPhil in
Medieval Literature. Performances in Cambridge included several oratorio works
and recitals, and in 2004 Cathy sang the Queen of the Night (Mozart Magic Flute)
and First Niece (Britten Peter Grimes) for Cambridge University Opera Society.
Since moving to Oxford in 2004, Cathy has sung with
several choirs including The Sixteen, and performances this year have included
Stravinsky Pulcinella and Haydn Nelson Mass. She has taken small roles in New
Chamber Opera Studio productions, and in winter 2005-06 sang the Knave of Hearts
in a touring production for Opera Anywhere. Most recently Cathy sang Susanna for
Oxford Millennium Opera’s June 2006 production of The Marriage of Figaro, just
before switching from soprano to mezzo-soprano.
Cathy is currently studying for a Postgraduate Diploma in
Music at Birmingham Conservatoire, where she is taught by Christine Cairns.
Jon Stainsby is a doctoral student in
English at Merton College, and combines his academic studies with choral and
solo singing engagements. While an undergraduate, he was a choral exhibitioner
at Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge, and subsequently spent a year as a Lay
Clerk at Christ Church Cathedral, Oxford. He has also sung with the Clerks of
Christ Church, Magdala, Alamire Consort, the Choir of Magdalen College, Oxford,
the Chorus of the Academy of St Martin in the Fields, and with the Choir of
London on their 2006 tour to Israel. His solo appearances have included Handel Messiah, Bach St John Passion, Mozart Requiem, Charpentier Te Deum, Pärt Passio, première performances of two
student-written operas at Harvard University, Stravinsky Pulcinella with
the Oxford Chamber Orchestra, and the role of The Traveller in Britten,
Curlew River. He has also performed Lieder in masterclasses with Robert
Levin and Graham Johnson (accompanied in the latter by Elizabeth Burgess), and
studies in Oxford with Fiona Dobie.
Born in 1983, Elizabeth Burgess was
educated at Uppingham School and spent a year as Assistant Organist at
Winchester College before becoming Organ Scholar at Christ Church, Oxford,
graduating with First Class Honours in June 2005.
Elizabeth studies the piano with Michael Dussek
and has performed extensively as a recitalist and concerto soloist; last year
she performed Rachmaninov’s Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini and two weeks ago
performed Beethoven’s Third Piano Concerto in Bristol. Increasingly, however,
she is turning her attention to chamber music and accompaniment, and is
currently working on music with a range of singers, instrumentalists and trio
ensembles.
Elizabeth has also given organ recitals in
cathedrals and colleges across the UK; as both pianist and organist she has
broadcast on national TV and live on BBC Radio 3 and 4, has appeared on numerous
commercial CD recordings and has toured throughout Europe, USA and New Zealand.
Elizabeth is currently working as a freelance pianist and organist in London.
